Red Light Therapy: Overhyped or Must-Try?

Glow-Up Goals or Gimmick? The Truth Behind Red Light Therapy
Red Light Therapy: Overhyped or Must-Try?
@W3STT.C

We recently went back to our gym routine in hopes of having Teyana Taylor-level abs by summer. However, summer is a few weeks away and chips keep going on sale, so we may have to push back our timeline a month or two (it’s giving sabotage!). Anywhoo…

In between sets and self-pep talks, we discovered a stand-in red light therapy booth offered at our gym as a wellness amenity. Immediately, we had questions: What exactly is red light therapy? Is it safe (even for our brown skin)? Is it just another overhyped trend, or is there real science behind it?

According to our gym’s front desk attendant-slash-unofficial wellness guru, red light therapy can:

  • Detox the body post-workout
  • Help prevent muscle soreness
  • Fade the look of stretch marks and scars
  • Improve skin texture and acne
  • Even promotes hair growth

Okay, front-desk friend–Say Less!

Twelve minutes later, we were standing in a glowing red pod, Tyla on repeat, rocking only protective eye goggles and our birthday suit. When we stepped out, we felt hot, hungry, and a little euphoric—convinced we’d just unlocked the secret sauce to being summertime fine.

But after a few weeks of sessions, we had more questions than answers. We really didn’t know if this thing worked and if so, how?  So, we dug into the science behind the glow. Here’s what we found:

So, How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

Red light therapy uses low-level wavelengths of red or near-infrared light to stimulate skin cells and deeper tissues. These wavelengths penetrate the skin to improve cellular energy (mitochondrial function), boost blood flow, and reduce inflammation—all of which can contribute to visible improvements in skin and muscle health.

Hair Growth: Fact or Fiction?

Red light was actually first studied for its ability to promote hair regrowth. It works by stimulating blood flow and nutrient delivery to hair follicles through a process called vasodilation—similar to how minoxidil works. While it takes a few months of consistent use to see results, research shows it can support thicker, fuller hair. Just note: like most treatments, effects taper off once you stop using it.

Clearer Skin & Fewer Wrinkles

Red light therapy has some of the strongest evidence in the skincare space. Consistent use has been shown to reduce acne, calm inflammation, and smooth fine lines. And yes, it is brown girl skin safe (However, blue light is another story–we’ll download you on that later).

Our go-to dermatologist, Dr. Caroline Robinson, confirms:

“Red light masks help with tone, wrinkles, and overall skin quality. Think of red light as light that activates—not just illuminates—by using specific wavelengths to stimulate your skin’s natural repair processes.”

Her advice? Don’t overdo it. Red light therapy works best in the sweet spot. Too little, and you’re wasting time. Too much, and you risk damaging your skin barrier or accelerating aging.

Boosts Collagen (Yes, Please)

Collagen is the holy grail of youthful skin, and red light may give your skin a boost from within. Studies show that red light therapy (typically in the 630–660 nm range) targets the dermis to enhance collagen and elastin production—leading to firmer, plumper skin over time.

Scar & Stretch Mark Reduction: Still TBD

When it comes to stretch marks, wounds, and other scars, the results are mixed. Some studies suggest red light can speed up tissue healing when used during the early phases of skin recovery, but the evidence isn’t consistent across the board. Long story short, red light therapy may help with the appearance of scars but don’t expect magic.

Muscle Recovery & Soreness

This is where things get especially interesting. Red and near-infrared light (800–850 nm) has been shown to reduce inflammation, support tissue repair, and improve mitochondrial function. These benefits may help reduce soreness and support muscle recovery—though more studies are needed to confirm long-term athletic benefits.

Our Final Red Light Therapy Takeaway

Red light therapy isn’t a miracle fix—but it’s not a gimmick either.

For skin health, collagen boost, and even hair regrowth, there’s promising science to back it. As for muscle soreness and scar healing? More research is needed, but early results are encouraging.

Before diving into red light therapy, here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Check with your dermatologist, especially if you have conditions like eczema, melasma, severe acne or sensitivity to light.
  • Not all red light devices are created equal. Wavelengths and exposure times vary, so always follow the instructions for your specific device.
  • Consistency is key—but moderation is everything.

Bottom line? Red light therapy can be a powerful tool in your beauty and wellness routine. Just pair it with good habits, patience, and (always) SPF.
