Beloved by our island Muses for centuries, we only discovered the power of sea moss about a decade ago. Now, sea moss gel is a sacred staple in both our kitchens and our skincare routines. It’s one of those rare, multi-purpose ingredients that feels almost too good to be true: mineral-rich, collagen-boosting, digestion-friendly—and it’s completely plant-based and natural.
Even more, sea moss is jam packed with vital nutrients and said to contain 92 of the 102 essential minerals our bodies need (this is likely only in trace amounts, but still very impressive for a sea plant). We’ve used our sea moss gel in everything from vegan cheesecakes and nut cheese rolls to homemade jam, dairy-free sauces, and our skin-loving smoothies and juices. We’ve even used sea moss gels as a thickening agent in soups, dressings, sauces and slow-cooked dishes, replacing flour with ease.
And because our method renders it virtually tasteless, adding sea moss gel to your dishes won’t overpower any of your food’s intended flavors!
We have so many exciting recipes to share with you that have sea moss gel on the list of ingredients. Whether you’re whipping up nutrient-packed smoothies or making your own DIY hydrating face masks, this easy sea moss gel recipe is one you’ll definitely want to keep on hand.
Let’s get into the ingredients:

Sea Moss Gel Recipe by Muse Ever After
A mineral-rich gel made from dried sea moss and water, this easy-to-make staple is packed with over 90 essential nutrients. Use it as an all-natural supplement to add to your smoothies, a plant-based alternative to thicken soups, sauces, or jams, and even in DIY skincare treatments for a healthier glow that starts from within.
Ingredients
- Raw dried sea moss (about 1/2 bag or 8 oz)
- Filtered water
- 1/2 lime, optional (for soaking)
Instructions
- Large glass bowl
- Large colander
- Vitamix or high-powered blender
- Glass storage jars with airtight lids
- Mixing spoon or a tamper for stirring
So, here’s the thing: if you are at all familiar with cleaning greens, prepping sea moss will be a breeze. Dried sea moss also needs to be hand cleaned and rinsed off repeatedly.
Supplies
Step 1: Clean & Prep
- Remove half of your dried sea moss and return the rest to the fridge in an airtight container.
- Place your portion in a colander and rinse under lukewarm water to remove sand, dirt, and ocean debris.
- Transfer to a large glass bowl and fill with cool water. Let soak for 15–20 minutes to soften and expand.
- After soaking, inspect each piece individually. Remove any hidden sand, scum, or stones trapped in the stems. (Think deveining shrimp—just more zen.)
- Rinse thoroughly and return to the colander. Clean your bowl to remove settled grit, then return sea moss to the freshened bowl.
Step 2: Soak Overnight
- Fill your clean glass bowl with fresh filtered water until the sea moss is fully submerged.
- Optional: Add half a lime to neutralize the oceanic scent and lightly alkalize.
- Cover and allow to soak at room temperature overnight (8–24 hours). The sea moss will expand and become gelatinous with a translucent color.
Step 3: Blend into Gel
- Drain the soaked sea moss and give it a final rinse.
- Add to a high-powered blender with up to 4–6 oz of filtered water (add water in slowly, pouring an ounce at a time.)
- Blend on low speed, using a tamper to push down as needed, until it forms a smooth, creamy gel.
Step 4: Store & Use
- Pour the gel into a clean glass jar with a tight seal.
- Refrigerate for up to 3–4 weeks.
Notes
Your gel is good to use straight out of the blender and will continue to firm as it chills in the refrigerator.
Voila, you’re all done! Now you can add a spoonful or two of sea moss gel to your morning smoothies for as an all-natural bouncy skin supplement, stir sea moss gel into soups and sauces for a plant-based alternative to traditional thickeners, and sub in sea moss gel for gelatin in delicious raw vegan desserts.
You can even use sea moss gel in DIY face masks to hydrate, tone, and boost collagen.
