Summer has officially entered the group chat and with it comes rooftop brunches, beach days, vacations, cute matching workout sets, and the instant desire to romanticize our lives again. But between girls’ trips, happy hours, cookouts, and spontaneous iced matcha runs, staying consistent with your fitness routine can quickly slide down the priority list.
The good news? Your dream summer body isn’t about perfection or chasing unrealistic trends. It’s about creating routines that make you feel strong, energized, confident, and connected to yourself.
To help us stay motivated all season long, we caught up with professional fitness trainer Tamika Harden, who shared her favorite tips for building a sustainable fitness routine that actually fits your lifestyle.
Whether you’re in your pilates princess era, rediscovering strength training, or simply trying to move your body more consistently this summer, here are 5 Fitness Tips to help you stay inspired and committed to your goals:
1. Romanticize Your Fitness Goals
Believe it or not, Tamika says your fitness journey should begin long before your first workout. The first step? Getting crystal clear about your goals and how you want to feel when you achieve them.
Grab your journal, vision board, Notes app, or Pinterest board and start mapping out your dream routine. What does your healthiest, happiest self look like this summer? How do you want your body to feel? What habits do you have? What outfits are you wearing to hot girl walks, strength training, and pilates classes?
Instead of overwhelming yourself with huge transformations overnight, Tamika recommends breaking larger goals into smaller, realistic steps that feel achievable and exciting.
Not only does this help build anticipation and motivation, but it also allows you to celebrate your milestones along the way. And that is often where the real transformation happens.
2. Just Show Up Anyway
Will every workout feel glamorous? Absolutely not. Some days you’ll feel energized and unstoppable. Other days, you may feel lethargic and sore.
You may look over to your perfectly made bed, your favorite comfort show playing, and the leftover takeout in the fridge that’s calling your name–and they all will sound significantly more appealing than some sweaty workout session.
Tamika says the secret is to still just show up anyway.
Consistency, not perfection, is what transforms routines into lifestyles. Even if your workout isn’t your strongest, the simple act of showing up builds discipline, confidence, and momentum over time.
“Give yourself at least 60 days of consistently showing up,” Tamika says. “That’s when you really begin noticing the changes.”
Sometimes the hardest part is simply getting there. Once you do, the good energy tends to follow.
3. Find Your Fitness Bestie
Everything feels better with a friend—even workouts.
Whether it’s a gym buddy, pilates instructor, walking group, trainer, workout app, or even a group chat that keeps everyone accountable, having support can make your routine feel more fun, motivating, and sustainable.
“Not that it can’t be done alone,” Tamika explains, “but there’s power in support.”
An accountability partner can help you stay committed on the days when motivation feels low while also celebrating your progress with you along the way. And let’s be honest: a post-workout smoothie and salad run with your bestie after getting your butt kicked in the gym sounds significantly more rewarding than pushing through it alone.
“When we talk about change or transformation, you want to set yourself up to be successful,” Tamika adds.
Translation: Don’t underestimate the power of community.
4. Celebrate the Small Wins
One of the biggest mistakes people make during their fitness journeys is focusing only on dramatic transformations or numbers going down on a scale. Focusing solely on these big wins makes it easier to miss all the magic that happens in between.
Tamika encourages her clients to reassess their goals monthly, quarterly, and annually while paying attention to the smaller wins that often go unnoticed.
Maybe your endurance has improved. And maybe you’re lifting heavier weights. And what about the boost in your energy levels, your clothes that fit differently, your posture has improved, or your confidence has skyrocketed? Those wins matter, too.
“The goal is not to aim for perfection, but for change,” says Tamika.
Fitness isn’t about becoming perfect. It’s about becoming stronger, healthier, and more connected to yourself over time.
And sometimes the biggest transformation happens mentally long before it becomes physical.
5. Stop Chasing Trends and Choose What You Enjoy
Every summer seems to come with a new viral fitness obsession.
One season it’s the “hot girl walk.” The next it’s reformer pilates, strength training, pickleball, cycling, HIIT classes, or 12-3-30 treadmill workouts dominating our feeds.
While every new trendy workout promises results, it can be hard to determine which workout is worth adding into your already busy schedule.
But according to Tamika, the “best” workout is simply the one you’ll actually stick with consistently.
“What matters most is your consistency,” she says. “And if it’s something you genuinely enjoy doing, it becomes much easier to maintain.”
In other words, you do not need to force yourself into workout routines you secretly hate just because they’re trending online.
Movement should feel empowering, challenging even, but you should not feel miserable.
So whether your summer wellness era includes swimming, yoga, dance cardio, long walks with an iced coffee, pilates classes, or lifting weights while listening to your favorite playlist, the goal is finding routines that make you feel good enough to return to them again and again.
Because confidence, strength, and fitness glow-ups are built through consistency and personalization. Do whatever movement brings you joy!
Long Story Short
Muses, this summer, focus less on chasing perfection and more on creating routines that support the version of yourself you’re becoming.
Move your body. Stay hydrated. Celebrate your progress, no matter how big or small. Wear the cute workout set. Take the walk. Stretch after the gym. Romanticize your healthy habits.
Your dream summer body isn’t built overnight, it’s built through small choices, consistency, and showing up for yourself over and over again.
